Modern dental technology in Sandgate

Laser Dentistry in Sandgate

Dental lasers provide another way to work with selected tooth and soft-tissue conditions.

Dental Seasons uses the Fotona LightWalker dental laser at our Sandgate clinic.

The system combines two laser wavelengths that can be used for different dental applications involving hard tissues such as teeth and soft tissues such as gums.

Laser treatment is not automatically the best option for every dental procedure.

We use it when the technology provides a useful clinical advantage for the particular treatment being performed.

What is laser dentistry?

A dental laser produces a concentrated beam of light that interacts with tissue in a controlled way.

Different laser wavelengths interact differently with water, tooth structure, soft tissue and other biological materials.

This means a laser suitable for one procedure may not necessarily be suitable for another.

Dental Seasons uses a Fotona LightWalker system, which combines Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser technology within one dental platform.

This allows our dentists to consider laser-assisted techniques across selected hard- and soft-tissue procedures where clinically appropriate.

The laser is a treatment tool rather than a treatment in itself.

The first question is always what dental problem needs to be addressed. We then decide which technique or combination of techniques is appropriate.

Where dental lasers may be used

Soft-tissue procedures

Dental lasers can be used for selected procedures involving the gums and other oral soft tissues.

Depending on the problem, this may include reshaping or removing small areas of soft tissue or assisting with other soft-tissue treatment.

Periodontal care

Laser technology may be used as part of selected gum and periodontal procedures.

Whether it adds value depends on the type and severity of the condition and the overall treatment plan.

Selected tooth procedures

Certain laser wavelengths can interact with hard dental tissues.

For appropriate cases, laser technology may be considered as part of treatment involving tooth structure or decay.

Conventional dental instruments may still be required depending on the procedure.

Endodontic applications

Dental lasers can have applications within endodontic treatment, including selected procedures involving the root canal system.

They are used as part of treatment rather than as a replacement for the fundamental cleaning, shaping and sealing required during root canal therapy.

Oral soft-tissue treatment

Laser technology may be considered for selected procedures involving oral soft tissues where controlled removal or modification of tissue is required.

The appropriate technique depends on the diagnosis and treatment goal.

Other dental applications

Modern dental laser systems have a wide range of potential applications.

That does not mean every available laser procedure is necessary or appropriate for every patient.

We recommend its use only where it makes clinical sense.

Laser does not automatically mean better

Technology is only one part of good dental care.

Our focus remains on understanding the problem, explaining the available options and using the appropriate tools for the treatment being provided.

Here are a few experiences shared by patients who have visited Dental Seasons.

Dr Andrew Bachour, principal dentist at Dental Seasons Sandgate

New technology can be useful, but the technology itself should never determine the treatment. Some dental procedures can be performed effectively using a laser.

Others are better performed with conventional dental instruments. And some treatments may use both.

The appropriate choice depends on the tissue involved, the size and location of the problem, the treatment objective and the dentist’s clinical judgement.

At Dental Seasons, having laser technology gives us another treatment option rather than replacing established dental techniques.

The Fotona LightWalker at Dental Seasons

Our Sandgate clinic uses the Fotona LightWalker dental laser.

The system combines two different wavelengths:

Er:YAG

This wavelength is strongly absorbed by water and can be used for selected applications involving both hard and soft dental tissues.

Nd:YAG

This wavelength interacts differently with tissue and is commonly associated with selected soft-tissue, periodontal and other dental applications.

Having both wavelengths available allows the clinician to select the appropriate laser mode for the procedure being performed.

The settings, wavelength and treatment technique depend on the individual clinical situation.

Will laser dentistry replace the dental drill?

Not necessarily.

For some appropriate procedures, a dental laser may reduce the amount of conventional instrumentation required.

For others, traditional dental instruments remain the most appropriate or efficient way to complete treatment.

Some procedures may involve a combination of laser and conventional techniques.

We will not recommend laser treatment simply because the technology is available.

The method should be chosen according to what provides sensible and predictable treatment for the individual problem.

Is laser dentistry more comfortable?

Patient experience varies depending on the procedure, the tissue being treated and individual sensitivity.

Some laser procedures may feel different from conventional dental treatment and, for selected applications, may require less mechanical contact with the tooth or soft tissue.

However, laser treatment should not be assumed to be painless.

Local anaesthetic may still be required depending on the procedure.

Before treatment begins, your dentist will explain what to expect and whether anaesthetic or other comfort measures are appropriate.

Laser dentistry and gum treatment

Gum disease ranges from mild inflammation around the gums to more advanced periodontal disease affecting the structures supporting the teeth.

The foundation of periodontal treatment remains controlling plaque and bacterial deposits, improving daily cleaning and removing deposits from the tooth and root surfaces where required.

Laser technology may have a role as an additional tool in selected periodontal procedures.

It does not replace good oral hygiene, appropriate professional cleaning or ongoing periodontal maintenance.

Laser dentistry and tongue-tie procedures

Dental lasers can be used for selected soft-tissue procedures involving the tongue or oral frenula.

However, identifying a visible tongue-tie does not automatically mean a procedure is required.

Function, symptoms, age and other clinical factors need to be considered first.

Where a tongue-tie assessment suggests that treatment may be appropriate, we will discuss the available options as well as whether input from another healthcare professional is useful.

Laser technology in root canal treatment

Root canal treatment involves removing inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth, cleaning and shaping the root canal system and sealing it.

Laser technology may be used as an additional tool in selected endodontic procedures.

It does not replace the fundamental steps of properly cleaning, shaping and filling the root canal system.

Whether laser assistance is appropriate depends on the individual tooth and treatment plan.

When will my dentist recommend laser treatment?

You do not need to decide whether you need a laser before making an appointment.

The process begins with diagnosing the dental problem.

If laser technology is appropriate, your dentist can explain:

  • Why it is being considered
  • What role it will play in the procedure
  • Whether conventional treatment is also required
  • What alternatives are available
  • What you can expect during and after treatment

The decision should be based on the treatment required rather than the technology itself.

No dental treatment should be described as universally painless. The experience depends on the treatment being performed and the individual patient. Some laser procedures may involve less mechanical contact with tissue, but local anaesthetic may still be appropriate.

Can a laser replace the dental drill?

Sometimes laser technology can reduce the need for conventional instrumentation during selected procedures. However, dental drills and other instruments are still required for many treatments. Some procedures use a combination of techniques.

Can dental lasers be used on gums?

Yes. Dental lasers can be used for selected soft-tissue and periodontal procedures involving the gums. The appropriate treatment depends on the particular condition.

Can laser dentistry treat gum disease?

Laser technology may be used as an additional tool in selected periodontal treatment. It does not replace plaque control, professional cleaning, treatment of deposits around the teeth or appropriate ongoing periodontal care.

Can laser technology be used during root canal treatment?

Laser technology may have a role as an additional tool during selected endodontic procedures. It does not replace the fundamental cleaning, shaping and sealing stages of root canal treatment.

Can a dental laser be used for tongue-tie treatment?

Dental lasers can be used for selected frenulum procedures. However, treatment should only be considered after assessing function, symptoms and whether intervention is appropriate. Read about tongue-tie assessment.

Is laser dentistry suitable for children?

Laser technology can be used in selected dental procedures involving children, but suitability depends on the treatment required, the child and the clinical circumstances.

Does every Dental Seasons patient receive laser treatment?

No. The Fotona LightWalker is one of several clinical tools available at Dental Seasons. We use it when it is appropriate for the procedure being performed.
