Helping children feel comfortable from the beginning

For children, a dental appointment is about much more than checking teeth.

Early visits give children the opportunity to become familiar with the dental environment while giving parents a chance to ask questions about brushing, diet, tooth development and anything they have noticed at home.

The Australian Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit when their first teeth appear, with a dental check-up by their first birthday. Starting early can help make dental visits familiar before there is pain or a problem.

At Dental Seasons, we adapt the appointment to the child in front of us. Some children are happy to climb straight into the dental chair. Others prefer to look around, ask questions or take a little more time.

If your child has dental anxiety, sensory sensitivities, a previous difficult dental experience or anything else that may help us make the visit easier, please let us know when you book.

Children’s dental care as they grow

First dental visits

Early dental visits allow us to check the teeth and gums, answer parents’ questions and help your child become familiar with visiting the dentist in a positive environment.

Check-ups and prevention

Regular dental examinations allow us to monitor your child’s teeth, gums and oral hygiene. Depending on their individual needs, preventive care may include cleaning, fluoride treatment or fissure sealants.

Help when something is wrong

Children can develop tooth decay, toothache, sensitivity, broken teeth and dental injuries just like adults. If something does not look or feel right, we can assess the cause and discuss suitable treatment.

Growing teeth and jaws

As children grow, we monitor how baby teeth are being replaced, how the permanent teeth are emerging and how the bite and jaws are developing. If something would benefit from a closer orthodontic assessment, we can discuss the appropriate next step.

Watching more than just individual teeth

Many of the families we care for have been visiting Dental Seasons for years. Here are some experiences shared by parents and patients from our community.

Dr Andrew Bachour, principal dentist at Dental Seasons Sandgate

Children’s mouths change considerably as they grow.

During dental visits, we look at the health of the teeth and gums as well as how the teeth are emerging, available space, the developing bite and the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

Crowding, crossbites, early or late loss of baby teeth, habits such as thumb sucking and other developmental concerns can sometimes be identified while a child is still growing.

Not every difference needs treatment.

Where we notice something worth monitoring, we will explain what we can see and whether it is best to simply review it over time or consider a more detailed orthodontic or dentofacial assessment.

Our aim is to give parents useful information without turning every variation in development into a treatment problem.

Kids dental care questions

When should my child first visit the dentist?

The Australian Dental Association recommends a child’s first dental visit when their first teeth appear, with a dental check-up by their first birthday. Early visits are often simple and give your child the opportunity to become familiar with the dental environment before there is a problem.

What happens at my child’s first dental appointment?

The exact visit depends on your child’s age and comfort. We may look at their teeth and gums, discuss brushing and diet, check how the mouth is developing and answer any questions you have. For very young children, the aim may simply be a gentle introduction and examination.

What if my child is nervous about the dentist?

Let us know before the appointment. We can explain things in child-friendly language, introduce equipment gradually and work at a pace appropriate for your child. If they are not ready for a particular part of treatment, the dentist can discuss the safest and most appropriate next step with you.

Are baby teeth important if they eventually fall out?

Yes. Baby teeth help children eat and speak and maintain space for the developing permanent teeth. Decay or infection in baby teeth can also cause pain and other problems, so keeping them healthy is important.

How often should children have a dental check-up?

There is no single interval that is right for every child. The dentist will recommend a review schedule based on factors such as your child’s age, oral health, development and risk of tooth decay.

Can you help if my child has a toothache or broken tooth?

Yes. If your child has dental pain, a broken tooth or another urgent dental concern, contact us as soon as possible. For urgent problems, calling us is usually best so our team can help determine the most appropriate appointment.

Do you offer CDBS bulk billing?

Dental Seasons can bulk bill eligible treatment under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, subject to eligibility, available benefits and CDBS requirements. Visit our Bulk Billed Kids Dental page for more information.
