When should my child first see a dentist?

We can see a baby at any age, especially if you have any concerns about their teeth, gums or mouth.

If your child is brushing well and there are no concerns, they may not need to be seen until around age three.

Sometimes it is a good idea to bring little ones along to a parent’s or sibling’s appointment from a younger age. It lets them get comfortable with our faces and the clinic before they have a visit of their own.

Reasons to book sooner

You have a concern

Any worry about your baby’s teeth, gums or mouth is a good reason to book.

Teeth that look different

Teeth that look discoloured, damaged or are coming through in an unusual way.

An injury

A knock to the mouth or teeth should be checked, even if it seems minor.

Pain or swelling

Pain, swelling or a sore in the mouth should be seen promptly. See our emergency dentist page.

Questions about development

If you are unsure whether your child’s mouth is developing as expected, ask us.

Slow, gentle and at your child’s pace

Dentist at Dental Seasons Sandgate

We never rush a baby or toddler. Every visit goes at your child’s pace.

They may enjoy a ride in the chair, we may do a knee-to-knee exam, and we count their teeth.

Many families bring little ones along to a parent’s or sibling’s appointment first, so they get comfortable with our faces and the clinic.

What happens at a first visit

Settling in

We say hello, let your child look around and go at their pace.

A ride in the chair

Many little ones enjoy a ride in the chair, and it helps them get used to it.

A knee-to-knee exam

We may do a knee-to-knee exam, where your child stays close to you while we have a look.

Counting teeth

We count their teeth and have a gentle look at their mouth, then talk through anything you would like to ask.

Slow, and at your child’s pace

There is no rush. If your child is unsettled, we slow down. If they would like to come back another time, that is fine too.

Our whole team, from the front desk to our dentists, is gentle and caring. If your child is nervous, see our page for nervous patients.

What happens at a first visit?

We go slowly and at your child’s pace. They may enjoy a ride in the chair, we may do a knee-to-knee exam, and we count their teeth.

Can my baby come to my appointment?

Yes. Sometimes it is a good idea to bring younger children along to a parent’s or sibling’s appointment so they get comfortable with our faces and the clinic.

Yes, if your child is eligible. Eligible children may access bulk billed care through the CDBS from birth, subject to benefit limits. Eligibility is assessed by Services Australia. Learn more about bulk billed kids dental care through CDBS.

What is a knee-to-knee exam?

It is a way of looking at a young child’s mouth while they stay close to a parent. It helps little ones feel safe and secure while we have a gentle look.

Will my toddler sit in the chair?

Many little ones enjoy a ride in the chair. We go slowly and at your child’s pace, and we can adapt if they would rather stay close to you.

What if my child cries or is unsettled?

Some children are unsettled at first, which is normal. We slow down, take our time and go at your child’s pace.

Does my child need to be seen if I have no concerns?

If your child is brushing well and you have no concerns, they may not need to be seen until around age three. You are always welcome to bring them in earlier, including to a family appointment.
