What is teeth straightening?

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth, and in some patients guides the growth or shape of the jaws, to improve alignment and how the teeth fit together.

People seek treatment for crowded teeth, gaps, crooked or rotated teeth and bite problems. The right approach depends on your age, your goals and how your teeth and jaws are developing.

Systems we offer

Fixed braces

Brackets and wires bonded to the teeth. They give control over tooth movement and suit many types of case.

Clear aligners

A series of removable clear trays. See our page on Invisalign.

Expanders

Removable or fixed appliances that guide jaw growth in growing children. See early orthodontic treatment.

MARPE

Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion uses small mini-implants to help widen the upper jaw, mainly when growth is nearly or fully complete.

MSE

A Maxillary Skeletal Expander also uses mini-implants to anchor an expander in the roof of the mouth to widen the upper jaw.

Teeth, jaws, or both

Dentist at Dental Seasons Sandgate

Straight teeth are only part of the picture. Your bite and the shape of your jaws matter too.

We discuss all of our findings with you, and it is your decision whether to focus on the teeth or to also address the jaws.

For growing children, early treatment can guide jaw development. For teenagers and adults, options range from braces and aligners to expanders, depending on the case.

Learn About Early Orthodontic Treatment

Treatment for children, teenagers and adults

Children

From as young as four, treatment can focus on guiding jaw growth and creating space. See early orthodontic treatment.

Teenagers

Fixed braces or clear aligners are common options once most adult teeth have come through.

Adults

Options include braces, clear aligners and, in selected cases, expansion with mini-implant supported appliances. It is never too late to ask.

Teeth, jaws, or both?

After assessing your teeth, bite and jaws, we discuss all of our findings with you.

Some people want to focus on straightening the teeth. Others prefer to also address how the jaws have developed, for example with an expander. It is up to you, and we explain the advantages and limitations of each approach so you can decide.

What to expect

Consultation

We assess your teeth, bite and jaws and discuss what you would like to change.

Records

Photographs, scans and X-rays are taken, including 3D CBCT imaging when clinically indicated.

Treatment plan

We present our findings, explain the options and answer your questions.

Treatment visits

Visits range from fortnightly to monthly, depending on the system.

Retention

Retainers are normally needed afterwards to help keep teeth in their new positions.

Which system is right for you?

The best system depends on:

  • Your age and how your jaws are developing
  • Your bite and the movements needed
  • The width of your jaws
  • Your goals and how you prefer to be treated
  • How well you can follow instructions, such as wearing aligners or elastics

We explain the options, and the advantages and limitations of each, before you decide.

Looking after your teeth during treatment

Braces and appliances make cleaning harder, so careful brushing and cleaning between your teeth matters. Regular check-ups and cleans, limiting sugary drinks and a custom mouthguard for sport all help protect your teeth during treatment.

Risks and limitations

Possible effects and limitations include:

  • Soreness or discomfort, especially after adjustments
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Decay or gum problems if cleaning is difficult
  • Appliance breakage or loss
  • Teeth moving back after treatment if retainers are not worn
  • Treatment depending on your cooperation, for example wearing aligners or elastics
  • Treatment time and results varying between people
  • For mini-implant supported appliances: loosening of a mini-implant, soft tissue irritation or infection

We explain the risks that apply to your treatment before you decide.
